Get paid stuff for free thanx to Alexa!!!

By admin | March 10, 2008

Disclaimer: This is a highly controversial and non condoned method by Shockpress.com, we’re posting this for informational purposes, if you have a site offering subscriptions of any kind or downloadable item, please be sure to set your page to be not indexed by Alexa.

Alexa security holes

So, Alexa is a quite sneaky piece of toolbar, mainly made for commercial purposes, although some people says it’s mainly spyware (which we do not confirm, but in essence it is since its role is to spy which pages you visit). Anyway, the nifty sneaky tool now is hitting subscription and downloadable goods and services sites hard due to its own “spy” nature. Let’s see: the Alexa process consists in the following steps:

1) First, the surfer downloads the Alexa toolbar

2) Once installed, every installed Alexa toolbar will send back to Alexa all kind of info about sites visited by any given computer

3) Alexa will post for the public some of the results sniffed by the toolbar

Not too shabby.

Problem is people buys thing on the Internet, so every time you enter your CC and buy something, guess what… Alexa makes it available to everybody. Don’t you believe me? OK, go to Alexa and type “Thank you for your purchase” and see what you get.

I’ve got to admit, this is a great tip.

The amount of free downloaded Ebooks I got is amazing.

Who is more to blame here…

Alexa for not limiting their robot behavior

    OR

the webmaster for not being more careful with their robots.txt file?
