This is a list of the most shocking celebrity stories and scandals for 2007 according to the readers of Boston Globe. Nº 10 Paris Hilton Goes to Jail

Early in 2006, Paris Hilton received little more than a slap on the wrist (okay heavy fines and probation) for DUI charges. When she later violated her probation, the heiress was sentenced to 45 days in jail. While some argued it was done to prove a point, others insisted it was long overdue. Hilton eventually served 23 days in jail in 2007.

Nº 9 Larry Birkhead is the father of Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter

After Anna Nicole Smith’s sudden death, the former Playboy model’s ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead stepped forward to claim paternity of her daughter Dannielynn. What followed was a drawn-out custody battle between Birkhead and Smith’s lawyer turned lover Howard K. Stern. Even Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt (Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband) stepped forward to say he might be the father. A DNA test later proved what Birkhead had been saying all along: he is the father.

Who would have thought the backup dancing K-Fed would turn out to be the more suitable parent for the Spears-Federline offspring? A judge ruled Britney unfit to care for Sean Preston and Jayden James because of her frequent substance abuse and has limited her visits with the children to three times a week.

Nº 7 Britney Spears lost and confused at Video Music Awards

For Spears’s comeback performance, we hoped for that python-toting dance diva to grace the stage once again. You know, the old Britney. Reality couldn’t have been further from the truth. Spears appeared confused, bewildered, and altogether too out-of-practice to be performing on stage during this year’s Video Music Awards. There’s always next year… right?

Nº 6 Alec Baldwin calls his daughter “rude, thoughtless little pig”

Alec Baldwin won’t be getting the “Father of the Year” award, that’s for sure. The “30 Rock” actor left his daughter Ireland some choice words on April 11, 2007. He called his now 12-year-old a “rude, thoughtless little pig” in a voice mail after she neglected to answer a prearranged phone call from Baldwin. The actor later appeared on “The View” and apologized.

The coolest shocking celebrity story “IMNSHO” (in my not so humble opinion) belongs to Keith Richards. Okay, so when Rolling Stones frontman Keith Richards claimed to have snorted his father’s ashes, he was kidding. But before we knew that, the outrageous claim left us all a little bewildered and lost due to its salacious slant.

Yet more news from… guess who? Yeah, Britney, but I’m sure you guessed it because there a huge title over these words, but mos Boston Globe readers wouldn’t guess it even then. Anyway, this was, as they say, just the tip of the iceberg for Britney Spears — the first event in what seems like a year-long unraveling of the washed up pop star. In February of 2007 Spears walked into a California hair salon and used a pair of clippers to shear off her hair. It’s been bad wigs and hats (and a dearth of normal behavior) since.

Nº 3 Hollywood superstar Owen Wilson attempts to commit suicide

Though Owen Wilson often plays funny characters on the big screen, his attempted suicide is certainly no laughing matter. The 38-year-old actor was treated for depression at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after he reportedly attempted to commit suicide. Wilson’s brother Luke found him after he had overdosed on crystal meth and the prescription medication Oxycodone and had slit his wrists.

Nº 2 Anna Nicole Smith passes away

The former Playboy model, who at times seemed to be channeling the effervescent blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, died on Feb. 8, 2007. She was 39. The official cause of death was accidental drug overdose, the result of a lethal combination of sleeping pills and prescription medication.

And now for our number one, numero uno… guess who? guess, guess, guess…. WRONG. It’s not Britney Spears, it’s Britney Spear’s sister!!!!

Nº 1 Britney’s sis Jamie Lynn is pregnant

yaaaay, Casey Aldridge got the lotto, maybe not as fortunate as Kevin Federline, but not too shabby, huh? As the younger sister of Britney, Jamie Lynn Spears has already had a trying year. Her sister’s court dates, paparazzi scrapes, and razor run-in has left the “Zoey 101″ star looking downright angelic in comparison. Until the news broke on Dec. 19 that the 16-year-old is pregnant. Spears is expecting a child with 18-year-old boyfriend Casey Aldridge. Let’s hope 2008 brings better luck for the Spears girls — if not more shocking headlines.
